Gender Identity is mostly determined by your society

Gender identity stresses on the characteristics of each gender. As I understand, we should only have two main gender which is male and female. Let's count out any Khunsa because it is not so significant and I don't want to discuss about any. There is this one thing that I observe. It is the theory of the society in terms of gendered identities. In other words, how do the society views each gender differently.

The first thing is regarding the reinforcement. Take example of your parents. It wil be more obvious if you have a combination of males and females siblings. Your parents would practice different reinforcement in terms of rewarding and punishing their children.
As for example, a girl might not receive physical punishment as how a boy would be punished. And the reward system differs too. A boy may be given a ball as a reward while a girl may get a barbie doll.

The second thing is in terms of the division of labour. The responsibilities of each child is different. A boy's responsibility is different from a girl. Let me make it clear for you by providing an example, if there are guests who come to your house, a girl is more expected to prepare and serve drinks. They will not expect a boy to prepare and serve the refreshments though in some cases boys will do it too. (As in my case, because I don't have any girl siblings)

On the other hand, clothing for boys and girls are different too. This is a clear illustration of how the style of dressing differs for both genders. Boys will never wear dress in public(Normal boys I mean). Girls are considered as impolite if they wear shorts and a singlet.

In most family, the bedrooms are gendered too. See for yourself, girls usually use flowers as the main theme of their bedroom. Curtains are pink. Bedsheets too. Why? Because these themes are closely related to girls. Meanwhile, boys don't use flowers nor colourful toys illustrations as their main theme. Some of them don't even have a theme. They just wear what is there for them to wear.

The next different that is quite obvious is the way how your parents treat you. Parents are more likely to get involve in rough games with their boys while girls don't. While a boy will play passing football with his father, a girl will not get involve in such game in most cases. Why? Again because of how the society perceive you. A society doesn't normally see a girl who likes to play football as normal.

The last thing that I want to discuss touches on the types of present that a boy and a girl receive. What will you want as a birthday present if you are a boy? A cute and cuddly teddy bear? What if you are a girl. Would you want a jet plane model as your birthday present? In most instances you don't. Why? Again it is caused by how you believe what is appropriate for you.

That's all. I learn about this from my lecturer and from what I observe, I agree to these points. You are what you are today because of the kind of bringing up that you get. This includes, the view of the society and how it treats you according to your gender.

*Cheers. =)

well, u yourself had diff upbringing then, i see?

and they'll have rather a diff sense of responsibility too. you know, the elder sibling will feel the weight of it more than the younger.

    well, at least i do.

we are brought up the way we are because the society generally accepts that way.

maybe things will be different for me if i was an amazonian.. ;p

Hmm there's not much different. Eventhough there are societies that have different interpretation when it comes to gender, still the views are more or less the same. Regarding being the elder thing, it is under a different scope. I;m just trying to emphasize how the bringing up and the views of society have impacts on the product of a man/woman according to their gender.

  3. Well, yes the society is a big player in moulding men. however, i do think people nowadays are trying to be sort of a maverick. everybody wants to be different- individualism.

but then, some things, i deduce from what you're saying cant be changed.
